Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is a non-destructive testing technique used to detect surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel, and cobalt. The process involves magnetizing the material, either directly or indirectly, and then applying fine magnetic particles—either dry or suspended in a liquid—over the surface. If any cracks or discontinuities are present, they disrupt the magnetic field, causing the particles to accumulate at the flaw site and form a visible indication. MT is a quick and effective method widely used in industries like construction, railways, and shipbuilding for inspecting welds, castings, and structural components.
